Hello dear readers. Tonight with me is the cheeky adventurer Izzy Gin, hailing from the world of Terath where magic and technology co-exist.
Tell us about Terath. How do technology and mana co-exist and affect society?
Our society has developed around the use of mana. It powers our cities and serves as our currency is based on it. Manahi, of course, enjoy some prestige because there’s such a small percentage of the population who can use mana. Fortunately, most of them are good people. In fact, some of my best friends are manahi.
Recent events notwithstanding, we’re largely a peaceful population. We’re fortunate to have fantastic technology. I’ve never been able to decide whether technology augments mana or the other way around. But overall, we Terathians have a pretty sweet deal.
What were you first impressions when you were chosen together with Arc, Kassimeigh, Luc and Will?
Kassimeigh and I already had a great working relationship so I felt good about that. Who minds working with someone who incites terror and fear? Not too shabby for Izzy Gin. Seriously though, I always know I’m in good hands with Kassimeigh.
Arc is easy to read and a completely genuine, easygoing guy. I knew I’d like him. Even when he makes terrible jokes. Most of the time they’re fine but every now and then . . .
Luc’s gruff exterior didn’t always match the emotions I sensed from him, so he seemed interesting. I love interesting people.
Will, of course, was something else altogether. I knew right away I’d have a lot of fun with how uptight he was. But he’s loosened up a lot over the past couple years. Becoming a general was the best thing that could have happened to him. He can almost keep up with me now.
What was the hardest, scariest bit in your adventures?
Hmm. That’s a tough one. I’m not sure if it was when we were trying to figure out how and why the town of Sorrow disappeared and we had no idea what we were up against, or when we finally came face-to-face with it. But then there was also that time my friend changed everything we thought we knew about mana. So you got me. I can’t choose!
What are you looking forward to now?
Settling in at the fortress. Seeing what happens with Kassimeigh and Arc. I’m hoping that the sudden change in circumstances doesn’t turn out to be too much for her. But the rest of us are here to support her, so whatever comes, we’ll work it through.
Any romantic involvement?
Actually, there is a wedding coming up but it isn’t mine. I don’t think long-term entanglements are my thing. Short-term ones, though, are always a possibility, and I am living with a few hundred warrior-types. I feel pretty good about those odds.
How do you relax? What’s your favourite food and drink?
I love a big plate of smoky grilled vegetables. That’s boring, isn’t it? But I love champagne too. Maybe it’s just an association thing, but the fruity bubbles taste like happiness. And who doesn’t want all of that they can get?
Oh, and rich, gooey desserts. The kind of stuff you eat until your stomach hurts and then have to have just a little bit more.
