Dear readers, tonight with us is a teenaged girl, originally from 11th century Khorasan but now roaming a strange land where all the myths of our planet found a home. She and her friends must follow a prophecy that is guaranteed to change the face of the land — one way or another.
Tell us a little about where you grew up. What was it like there?
Who’s asking? I don’t take lightly to questions about my origins, you might be a purple mage for all that I know.
But if Ethan says that you are to be trusted, I will answer all your questions.
I am from Khorasan, the city that spreads culture and art to the whole world. My father is a master trader and a world traveler, everybody who is anybody in the twelfth century have heard of him, Amar El-Khorasani, but you should know that he is very famous.
Did you have any favourite toys as a child? Any cherished memories?
I think that Ethan really has faith in you, you can’t give this information to anybody, I will be immediately banished from Agartha.
As a child, my father brought for each of us, his children, a toy of the finest porcelain when he traveled to China, mine was a very nice doll, she had a silk dress and held a small umbrella. I used to take her with me all over the place, but then my mother took her away to concentrate on the house duties, I am a very good cook because of her.
As for memories, I think it was the day my father brought the astrologer to the house, and he started to explain to me and my ten siblings the stars in the heavens and how to use them to guide our ways in the night; I think this the most cherished memory of my childhood, this is when I decided that I wanted to travel, like my father.
What do you do now?
What kind of question is that? I thought that Ethan must have told you. We are traveling the land of Agartha in search of the chronicler, he will give us our next destination, I hope.
What can you tell us about your latest adventure?
Let’s see, I have mysteriously ended up in this strange and magical land, Agartha, although I don’t have any memory of how I came to be here.
I met this very nice young man, Ethan, you know him. I also met Darren, he is not as nice, but he is good, in his own savage way.
There is also this crazy army leader, the green lady, who is chasing us for some time, but we are two steps ahead of her.
It has been a very thrilling experience thus far.
What did you first think when you met Ethan?
Enraged, he was pointing an arrow at me, can you imagine that. I mean I was not even armed or anything, and I stumbled on his campsite, I was not prepared for a man crouching on the ground pointing an arrow to my chest.
But he put down the bow and arrow, and invited me to share his food, I felt he was special then; if this happened back home, I don’t think I would have been offered food, most probably I would have been packed up for the slavers.
What was the scariest thing in your adventures?
One thing? Only one thing? You must be new to Agartha then. But I will humor you, I have seen a dragon, a real one, ok, not exactly a dragon, Darren said it was a wyvern, but looked like a dragon to me.
Also, that time I almost fell to my death in a stream, that was life-changing.
And then there was the worst of them, when we were caught by the green lady, that woman can chill the blood of the bravest of warriors, luckily, I had Ethan and Darren by my side.
What is the worst thing about Agartha?
Many things, like the predators, or the magical predators that roam the land trying to eat you.
Then there is, of course, the continuous search for the next meal, which sometimes can attempt to eat you.
Everything in Agartha wants to eat you, I think.
What is the best thing about it?
I think the fruits, no really, they have this small fruit that they call Kwava, tastes like heaven in your mouth.
There are also the kind people in Mountain’s Child village, I really missed the Boyar and his family along our journey.
But I will have to say this, it was the place where I found Ethan and Darren, my best friends. Don’t tell them that, they can be too full of themselves sometimes.
Tell us a little about your friends.
Well, before coming to Agartha, I don’t think I really had any, I mean I had my siblings, my neighbor daughters, but none of them were really what you might call friends. Now, here in Agartha, I have Ethan and Darren.
Ethan is the last of the greens, but you must know that; did you know that he can pass understanding or confusion to others just like that? Once he caused around a hundred people to start attacking each other, but he did this to save us.
Darren, on the other hand, is a red, but he is not like the usual reds, those people are really cruel and scary; well Darren can be scary too, he can pull on the strength of a wolf or something like that, and he becomes some kind of force of nature, you really don’t want to stand in his way when he does that unless you are a friend like me and Ethan.
Any romantic involvement?
I think that this is too personal, I don’t think I should tell you.
Plus, you will go and tell him, after all, he is the one who asked me to talk to you, Ethan.
Please don’t tell him, swear on it.
Whom (or what) do you really hate?
The green lady, ok, I don’t hate her as such, but I want to have her punished for what she did, probably banished to where the blues and yellows ended up, I hear it is hell in there.
I don’t hate her, I loathe her.
What’s your favourite drink, colour, and relaxing pastime?
They have that fruit in Agartha, Kwava, but I told you about it; they make this sick juice from it, and if anything can match the taste the fleshy fruit leaves in your mouth, it is the juice of Kwava.
My favorite color, is green, no not green, maybe now it is green, but I usually had a thing for violet, indigo, these kinds of colors, they touch something in my soul.
As for relaxing pastime, did I tell you that I cook? I must have done that, because it is the most relaxing thing to do, and it fills your stomach as well.
What does the future hold for you?
The unfortunate events that happened recently caused me to be more convinced than ever that I have to find the chronicler, he has a lot to answer to.
Can you share a secret with us, which you’ve never told anyone else?
Why are asking so many personal questions? I am not sure that I can tell you anything.
Still, there is one thing that I can tell you, traveling the land for this long, I think that chronicler would be a complete letdown, at least as far as I can assume.
Sherif Guirguis is an Egyptian medical doctor that decided to leave medicine behind and pursue the passion of his life, the art of the word. He thinks of the world as too real to take seriously, this is why he prefers the fantasy worlds in books, as he is an avid reader of fantasy. He is happily married and has two daughters whom he adores.
You can find Mara on the pages of The Green Boy, the first novel of The Chronicles Of Agartha.
Join us next week to hear from the antagonist, a prince in a desert kingdom learning to lead his people to safety. Please follow the site by email (bottom-right) to be notified when the next interview is posted.
